Yoga Can Help Your Back

Look around the room...  four out of every ten people, right now, are experiencing back discomfort.  Over the next few months, seven out of ten people will experience back discomfort.  Ninety percent of us experience back discomfort over our lifetimes.  Yoga offers a systematic, scientifically proven, gentle program to rehabilitate and/or prevent injury.  The key difference in yoga is the emphasis on the breath.  It is the amazing healing power of conscious breath that takes the stretches from physical exercises to transformative practices.
A back care program would perhaps include some of the stretches below along with extensive instruction in deep breathing techniques to manage pain, alleviate stress and effect balance to all systems of the body, principally the nervous system.  The postures illustrated target strengthening and stretching the back from three different angles: lengthening the spine; loosening the hips and stabilizing the core.  This program is safe for most people but consult your health care practitioner to be sure.  Persons in the acute stage of injury (taking prescription medication or having severe mobility limitations) should wait a few days or weeks until your doctor approves of physiotherapy.
